Personal insurance guidance for people living in Spain — support available in English

Do you need car insurance in Spain?

If you own or drive a car in Spain, having insurance in place is a legal requirement, at minimum for the liability you could cause to other people or property. Beyond that legal minimum, most drivers choose a higher level of cover for their own vehicle as well.

Common types of cover

  • Third-party liability — covers damage or injury you cause to others.
  • Third-party, fire and theft — adds cover for your own vehicle in specific situations like fire or theft.
  • Comprehensive (“todo riesgo”) — the broadest level of cover, including damage to your own car in most circumstances.

What can affect your quotation

Insurers typically take into account things like the age and type of vehicle, how long you’ve held a licence, your driving history and claims record, where you live in Spain, and how the car is used (private or professional).

What you’ll typically need to provide

To prepare an accurate quotation, you’ll usually be asked for details such as your driving licence, vehicle registration details, and information about your previous insurance or driving history where applicable.

Coverage, exclusions, limits and price depend on the policy and your individual circumstances. Final terms are confirmed before you take out any policy.
