Home Insurance in Spain
A plain-English guide to insuring the place you live in Spain, whether you rent or own.
Why consider home insurance
Whether you rent or own your home in Spain, home insurance can protect the building itself, your belongings inside it, and in many cases your liability if something goes wrong and affects a neighbour or visitor.
Common types of cover
- Building cover (“continente”) — the structure of the property, typically relevant if you own it.
- Contents cover (“contenido”) — your personal belongings inside the home.
- Liability cover — protection if you’re responsible for accidental damage to someone else’s property.
What can affect your quotation
Factors typically include the size and type of property, its location, construction, security features, and the approximate value of the contents you want covered.
Renting vs. owning
If you rent, your landlord’s policy usually covers the building itself, but not your personal belongings — that’s where your own contents policy comes in. If you own your home, you may want both building and contents cover.
Coverage, exclusions, limits and price depend on the policy and your individual circumstances. Final terms are confirmed before you take out any policy.
